Where did all the Pinterest users go, Reader? After 11 quarters of consecutive user growth, Pinterest has allegedly lost 24 million users with a strong decline in Q2, though its revenue results remained strong for the period.

The loss, Pinterest says, is largely attributable to the global vaccine roll-out, and the re-opening of physical stores, which has impacted the adoption of eCommerce and online browsing.

As per Pinterest:

“Fewer MAUs came to Pinterest during Q2 than we expected. The primary driver of slower year over year MAU growth globally, and year over year MAU declines in the US, was the widespread easing of pandemic restrictions. As lockdowns lifted, people spent less time at home in Q2 2021 vs. Q2 2020. Given that many of Pinterest’s core use cases (e.g., decor, garden, cooking, DIY) are especially relevant at home, we believe we disproportionately benefited from increased time spent at home during pandemic lockdowns.”

This may sound like a very random piece of news. However, as marketers, we need to bear in mind that the post-pandemic world may affect the way users approach social media, as well as the rise of e-commerce we saw at the beginning of the year.

It’s too early to tell how other platforms will be affected, but keep an eye out, dear marketer. Change is coming.

  • TikTok is adding a new option that will enable broadcasters to assign ‘Live moderators’, being a person, or people, that can help them manage their streams. TikTok is also rolling out keyword filters for live-stream comments. thoughtful comment reminders to live-streams, which could help to stop commenters from making potentially offensive remarks keep things civil and welcoming — which, again, will be important considerations for potential brand and influencer partnerships.

FAB GIOVANETTI DIARY OF A CEO Do you remember the teen magazines that used to be in the newsstands twenty years ago? (Apologies in advance if you were not born twenty years ago, you just made me instantaneously feel ten centuries older) If, like me, you were lucky to be alike in such age of printing glory, you’d remember teen magazines filled with pops tart gossips, eyebrow raising advice about your intimate health and loads of quizzes and tests.
