Dear diary, how we went from a proposal to 500+ attendees in 48 hours

Published about 1 year ago • 6 min read

What a week it has been (already!). I wanted to share another example of not giving up and being patient.

For the past year, I have tried to find a partner to support us with free events throughout the year to discuss the importance of inclusion and accessibility in marketing.

Sadly, last year it didn't come to anything. I changed my approach. I better planned and organised to have a strong group of speakers I could put forward, and this year I got back at it.

Yesterday, we ran our first-ever panel on the subject. I was so emotional and excited to see 990+ people had RSVPed for the free event.

So much so that we had to include a replay only ticket to allow as many people as possible to access the talk.

Talk about a good problem to have!

Similar results were achieved with our Open Day - and this truly was a reminder that 70% of your efforts may not work, so you better learn from them the best you can.

In summary

  • How free events can truly benefit your brand
  • Create marketing experiences that deliver incredible value
  • How to find the right partners for your next marketing effort
  • Why commitment matters when partnering with people

From my Notion Dashboard

You can create yours here!

  • Very interesting post arguing whether WhatsApp newsletters will replace traditional emails. My hot take is that that is not going to happen, but it’s very interesting to read about it.
  • Clash of the titans for this amazing podcast debate. In one corner we have Jay Clouse, founder of Creator Science, host of the award-winning, 1M downloads in 18 months, Creative Elements podcast. In the other corner, we have Joe Casabona, Podcast Coach & Producer who helps podcasters become business owners at Podcast Liftoff, he creates online courses for LinkedIn Learning, and hosts a podcast called How I Built It. And Joe feels pretty strongly that video killed the podcast star.
  • Want to stop your users from getting overwhelmed? Be more clear. This is exactly how Blinkist solved their biggest customer complaint and achieved a 23% increase in conversions.

How to choose the right experience for you

When it comes to marketing, the best experiences are open and transparent. In our episode 134 of the podcast, Steph and I discuss why we chose open days as a marketing tool.

As a school, open days are so important—they give potential students a chance to really connect with your teachers and myself.

They provide dan opportunity to get up close and personal and understand exactly what we have to offer.

Open days also give students a chance to ask questions about your product or service - and to our surprise the attendance did not drop for our certification AMA sessions. In fact, we had lots of attendees showing up live to ask questions (and converted 2 out of those people!)

This gives them a greater understanding of how it works and what kind of value they can expect from it. It also allowed us to build trust with potential students by demonstrating that we-re open and honest about what we're offering.

What about you? What kind of experience would best set expectations about what you have to offer? Webinars, panels, summit?

Yesterday's event with PLANOLY was fantastic.

Honestly, I would not have done this on my own. This is also a huge appreciation to the team at PLANOLY for giving us a chance with this partnership and the incredible Reza Moreno.

We had learned this the hard way, but trying partnerships that did not feel just right. Not just from a value-perceptive, but also when it came to commitment.

It may be the Virgo in me, but I am dead serious.

When evaluating potential partners, look out for three key attributes: commitment, professionalism and responsiveness.

  • Commitment is essential because you want someone who is taking the project seriously.
  • Professionalism to me means having the right mindset. The mindset should not be "they're going to bring the people/they'll make the effort". Start from the beginning with the idea you'll allocate efforts and both put work into this being a success.
  • A good partner should should be responsive when it comes to communication – taking into account all aspects of planning and delivery.

A few tools that helped us coordinating our efforts:

  1. Share the load and be clear on how responsibilities will be handled between different partners based on strengths and available tools.
  2. Create a document for reference to include assets, copy, instructions (Google doc is great for collaborating).
  3. Create a shared timeline and assign responsibilities - we used Notion (OBVS) and review it weekly.
What can you bring into your next partnership? What strengths can you use to join forces with others to amplify your impact?

Fab-ulous weekly highlights

  1. I am going to say this again. Yesterday's panel was just THE BEST. You can currently only watch the replay if you signed up or if you are a marketing rebel in our course library and community but we'll let you know once more options become available.
  2. BB is back! It was a pleasure to have Jess Bruno back on the podcast *gentle fist pump*. We talked about strategy foundations and what you can expect from her certification workshop about auditing and strategy on social.
  3. We successfully moved from Flodesk to ConvertKit all of our newsletter efforts. Curious to know why? Reply to this email and I'll write about in in the next newsletter!

A lot has happened over the past two weeks, and I worked so damn hard. YET, after a whole year of trying and experimenting, I am starting to reap the fruits from the seeds we planted.

GROWTH. TAKES. TIME.

Just like I said here.

FAB GIOVANETTI DIARY OF A CEO This past month I came to a breaking point. My to-do list kept expanding, my work kept stretching and my time off was dwindling. Goodness knows if I needed help - and needed it fast. So off I went, in search of support with our day-to-day marketing. If you’re anything like me, when it comes to tackling big projects and expanding your team as an entrepreneur or solopreneur - delegation can feel intimidating and downright overwhelming. I mean, how do you even know...

FAB GIOVANETTI DIARY OF A CEO Do you remember the teen magazines that used to be in the newsstands twenty years ago? (Apologies in advance if you were not born twenty years ago, you just made me instantaneously feel ten centuries older) If, like me, you were lucky to be alike in such age of printing glory, you’d remember teen magazines filled with pops tart gossips, eyebrow raising advice about your intimate health and loads of quizzes and tests. Will you marry your BFF? If you were a Spice...

FAB GIOVANETTI DIARY OF A CEO And just like that, our latest cohort is almost over! In January, we set out to do the biggest update to our cohorts yet. New 30+ page playbook for both Notion and Google docs Revamp all of the sessions including teacher workshops Added 2 weeks and 4 sessions to the cohort I thought that'd be it - yet I have come out of these 8 weeks with 4 more pages of small changes. As such, I couldn't help but reflect on some of the things that I have learned in the journey,...
