Dear diary, our new YouTube channel taught me a lot about starting from scratch

Published about 1 year ago • 6 min read

First of all, hi there Reader, it's been a hot minute I know.

After having had to move all of my personal operation to ConvertKit (what we currently use for AMS) and put everything under one roof, I am back baby.

I survived a few launches, including an open day (more on this in the coming weeks!) and a whole new project!

Our Alt Marketing School YouTube channel is LIVE - cue party poppers. I am going to stick right below our first-ever video because I am so chuffed.

Starting a new YouTube channel from scratch is no easy feat. I should know - I've done it three times now. And while each time has been unique, there are some commonalities when starting something from scratch.

Regardless of what your new project may be, starting (again) can bring up all sorts of emotions:

  • embracing the unknown can be scary but also exciting
  • baby steps are still progress
  • it's never too late (or early) to start fresh

Whether you're starting a new business, moving to a new city, or just embarking on a new creative project, there is a lot you can learn from looking at the inception (and launch) of a YouTube channel - stay with me on this one!

In summary

  • Get clear on your audience's needs when approaching a new platform or product idea.
  • Starting from scratch can feel like an uphill battle, so it's important to be patient and celebrate the small wins.
  • Creating systems is essential for successful marketing and content creation; mapping a detailed schedule will help you control your workload.
  • When looking at content, having a trusted team or partner who can review and approve content before it goes live is also advantageous.
  • It's important to constantly review and update your strategies to keep track of what works and adjust accordingly.

  • Paying yourself is an important signal of the value of your time and expertise, and sacrificing payment to yourself can also impact your personal life. This piece covers figuring out what looks right for your particular needs, including how much you'd like to pay yourself, making sure you understand your existing expenses - and factoring in emergencies.
  • Curate the ultimate list of decision-making principles, called Starting Principles, to turn advice into action. Adding a new Starting Principle refines your identity and helps you make better decisions and shape your values.
  • Have you ever thought about using Medium to grow your email list? Because it’s possible - this article breaks down the exact steps you should use to do it.

Have a clear vision for the user-intent

As we set up a new YouTube channel, the first step is to define a clear vision for it. Due to house moves and other variables, it took us seven months to get there, which also allowed more research time.

Ask yourself what you hope to achieve and who you want to target.

A carefully thought-out plan will help give your channel focus and ensure you can attract the right viewers. We teach this a lot at the School - understand your users' intent when approaching a new platform (or product - or service).

  • What is your audience looking to gain from (Youtube, Twitter, product X)?
  • Who are some of the people your audience already consumes the content of?
  • What secret sauce will you bring to your channel/profile/product?

As I always say, marketers are scientists first and foremost - never forget that.

Example time

Steph (my co-host and our media wiz) and I worked incredibly hard to narrow down the intent of our YouTube channel. YouTube is a platform known for being very specific and loving content that narrows down on a particular style and expertise.

It takes time to grow something new, so don't give up if you don't see results immediately

The struggle is real! Growing a following on YouTube can feel like an uphill battle, so patience is the best antidote. We had 50 views on our first video last week, and I was over the moon!

If you do not celebrate the little wins, you will lose perceptive. Regardless of what you are starting, do not compare your point A with someone else's point M.

As the old saying goes, 'Rome wasn't built in a day', and now it's time to take her advice - no matter how slow progress may seem - progress is progress. You have the best chance to experiment, try new things, and explore as you are still growing and are new to the field.

Use it to your advantage.

Create systems, map a schedule and stick to it

When it comes to marketing, having a plan for creating content and delivering it on a regular basis is essential for success. This was increasingly true when kicking off our YouTube channel.

The system queen in me got to work as I started to map everything we needed to know.

  • Always start with systems. Creating systems that you can use consistently helps streamline the process of creating content, making it easier to stick to your schedule. Creating systems also ensures that all your content is consistent in terms of quality and message.
  • Create a realistic schedule. Taking the time to map out a detailed schedule will ensure you hit all your deadlines and remain in control of your workload.
  • Ask for help (if you can). Having a trusted team or partner who can review and approve your content before it goes live also helps guarantee consistency across all platforms. Having another set of experienced eyes on the project can prevent mistakes from slipping through the cracks, ensuring that everything you publish is up to par with your expectations.
  • Review your results. Finally, don't forget the importance of regularly revising and updating your marketing strategies! It's always important to stay ahead of trends by testing different tactics and strategies to ensure they are still relevant and effective.

Being consistent doesn't mean that nothing should change - it just means keeping track of what's working (or not) so you can adjust accordingly!

Example time

As we built the YouTube channel schedule, we ensured that we would start with a schedule that allowed me and Steph to work together to create reviews and finalise the content without overwhelming ourselves.

  2. A few weeks back, we released our episode with Alex Llull, one of our most loved episodes ever. It was great fun introducing a slightly new format and getting Alex to play along with us for a THIS or THAT section. You can listen here on you can watch on YouTube as well.
  3. We recently introduced to new sections in our community, including marketing campaign inspirations and also a round-up of marketing jobs from our directory. We have big plans for our course library and community, and I'm excited to see what 2023 brings!

FAB GIOVANETTI DIARY OF A CEO Do you remember the teen magazines that used to be in the newsstands twenty years ago? (Apologies in advance if you were not born twenty years ago, you just made me instantaneously feel ten centuries older) If, like me, you were lucky to be alike in such age of printing glory, you’d remember teen magazines filled with pops tart gossips, eyebrow raising advice about your intimate health and loads of quizzes and tests. Will you marry your BFF? If you were a Spice...
